Shiavo versus God...errr...Bush...er...Congress...
I haven't really wanted to weigh in heavily on the Terry Schiavo case on my blog, mainly because I think it is none of my business. I think it is a private matter in which the media needs no involvement, but the more I hear about our fine Republicans and their intervention in this case, the more I want to tell them to get their silly little noses out of where they don't belong! This case has been heard 20 times including by the Supreme Court. I think it has been decided. Mr. Schiavo does not gain anything by his wife being put out of her misery, except an end to watching his wife suffer. She has been like this for 15 years. She is not in a coma, with the possibility of waking up, and she has not improved as her parents suggest could happen.

But the reason I am writing about this is not because I have an opinion one way or the other about whether she should continue to be fed through a tube or not. My concern is WHY our president and his fellow Republicans think they need to be involved. The most outspoken politicians have of course been President Bush and Tom Delay. Both of whom have fallen on the other side of the line in very similar situations in the past.

My man, Allan Lichtman wrote this today about Tom:

"Representative Delay who now finds it so easy to savage Terri Schiavo's husband was then ready to put the interests of his wealthy contributors ahead of the rights of tens of millions disabled Americans, saying, “The Americans with Disabilities Act is not sensitive to the needs of our businesses - large and small - and will subsequently have a negative impact on our judicial system and on our nations productivity as a whole.”"

And he had this to say about Georgie:

"As for President Bush, in 1999, as Governor of Texas, he signed into law the Advance Directives Act under which Terry Schiavo’s feeding tube would have long ago been removed. In the absence of a living will for a married person, this Act designates the spouse as the legal surrogate, whom in consultation with physicians can remove life support if there is an “irreversible condition,” even if continued support can maintain external signs of life. But Bush’s Texas law goes yet further, authorizing doctors in consultation with a hospital’s ethical committee to remove life support in such conditions even against the wishes of the legal surrogate, whether a spouse or a parent in the case of a minor."

But worse still is that just last week a more egregous case than that of the well disputed Schiavo case used this law to end the life of a six month old baby against the mother's wishes here in Texas, yet no one batted an eye. So why now? Why for this woman? What is the agenda? And more importantly, what has happened to the Republican idea of limited government?
